These programs are made possible through the dedication of our volunteers, who generously contribute their time to fundraising efforts that support our Local’s cultural programming.
Registration is open to all Red River Métis but priority will be given to active Seven Oaks Métis Council Citizens.
Our Beading Circle brings together all Red River Métis from Winnipeg and surrounding areas to learn about their Métis history and culture through beading lessons and learning about the traditional style of Métis beadwork.
Over the course of twelve months, participants will explore various artistic techniques and mediums. The program will include sessions on doodling, drawing, painting with different materials, and creating still lifes, portraits, landscapes, and animal art. Instruction will also cover colour theory and help participants discover their artistic niche. Additionally, attendees will observe a live oil painting demonstration and receive guidance on how to market their artwork.
Seven Oaks Métis Council Sash Weaving program focuses on bringing Red River Métis together through learning the art of sash weaving. Participants will help each other focus on the teachings and engage in conversation in regard to skills and understanding. As one learner guides another they empower their strengths by helping each other with guidance and knowledge and information.
This workshop teaches participants how to create their very own, full-sized, capote. The workshop will provide participants with the knowledge and history of Métis style clothing and teach the skills to continue the artistry of capote making.
Seven Oaks Métis Capote Workshop is open to all Red River Métis Citizens who are registered in our Local.
Unfortunately, due to lack of funding, these programs have come to an end.
The Seven Oaks Métis Council Fiddle Program played a vital role in connecting Métis youth to their culture through the teaching of traditional fiddle music. This program not only fostered a deeper cultural understanding but also helped develop the next generation of Métis musicians, equipping them with a skill that brought joy to our community and offered potential opportunities for income and performance.
Our Fiddle Circle served as a meaningful space where youth learned to play the fiddle and perform traditional Red River songs, helping to preserve and pass down a rich musical heritage. Fiddling inspires celebration, encourages dancing, and brings people together, strengthening our sense of identity and community through shared traditions.
While we are deeply saddened that the Fiddle Program is no longer available due to a lack of funding, we remain committed to supporting Métis youth and are excited to introduce new cultural programming in the near future.
